My task was to find out what Russian women mostly fear when asked about the possibility of finding a partner abroad, in the West. In no way was my task claiming to adhere strictly to the rules of unbiased statistical survey but I hope it provides a general insight into the most common fears that Russian women have. All was done spontaneously when the time and opportunity allowed me and the women to respond. Over a period of six months, I went around dance clubs, cosmetology clinics, shopping malls, restaurants and, in the course of conversations, brought up the question: What is your greatest fear when dating Western men over the internet or through correspondence? I also asked the girls who I had the privilege to photograph for our dating website – during breaks in the photo- or video- shooting sessions. I did not provide the girls with ready-made answers to choose from. Their answers were spontaneous, off the top of their head. I would write down the answers or record them on video and later add it into a database. I had 241 girls interviewed and then had to go through all the answers and categorize them into similar groups. Some of the answers did not fit into any of the groups and, therefore had to be dismissed. The others were counted and ranked. From among all the answers, six groups were compiled and here is what they are:

1. Fear of Abuse or Loss of Freedom.

Most of the time the girls I interviewed asked if dating a Western guy is risky. Is he going to be abusive or just lock her up and do all the work around the house as some kind of household sex slave? TV programs like the one about Anastasia King, a mail order bride from Kyrgyzstan, who was killed by her husband, add oil in the fire and make women even more fearful.

2. Fear of Involvement with Losers

Many girls ask why would a guy look for a wife abroad unless there is something wrong about him. All sorts of suppositions are offered: he must have some psychological problems which make it impossible for him to hit it off with local women; he is very poor and has no stable income; he is an alcoholic or a drug addict, or just a plain loser that has to go so far to find a woman - all the local women stay away from him because they can see what kind of person he really is.

3. Fear of Involvement with Criminals or Organized Crime.

A lot of girls are wary of becoming targets for criminal types who view the whole dating thing as a way to get beautiful women for their dirty deeds. Some criminal groups specialize in luring women into their traps and then taking away their documents and forcing them to become prostitutes.
